Diploma unit 4 and 5 results

I got my WSET Diploma units 4 and 5 results yesterday. Although I got a pass in both I'm feeling a little disappointed. I failed the unit 5 sparkling tasting paper but got a merit in the theory and I got a pass in both the tasting and theory papers for the spirits.

I know I should be pleased to have got a pass in both papers but I had set myself a high standard and was aiming for a merit overall in the sparkling. Getting a merit in the spirits just wasn't on my radar as I'm not, in common with every other Diploma student I talk to, at all interested in spirits. I'm doing my Diploma to increase my knowledge and enjoyment of wine not spirits.

Failing the sparkling paper is a bit of a puzzle as I thought I had done OK on it. But reading through my previous post on it I am sure the Vouvray let me down and I suppose my descriptors on the other 2 just weren't detailed enough.

Well done to the WSET however for getting the results out in 10 weeks instead of the 13 they quote.

The results may not be what you were after, but you did pass (many congratulations) and hopefully you enjoyed the process.

Presumably you still have the final Unit 3 to go?

Many thanks for the good wishes Robert. I didn't really enjoy the spirits but did the sparkling. As always the enjoyment comes from learning something new and being able to explore wines I would not have tried before.

Unit 3 for me is in January. At the LIWSF last week I spoke to many Diploma students who sit unit 3 next month and were getting in some last minute tasting practice. Good luck to all of them.

Congrats indeed!

I always thought it odd to have spirits seemingly stuck on the end like an afterthought. But then it is the Wine and Spirit Education trust.

Well done Colin! It's the results that count and you're well on the way to your Diploma.

I just took the WSET unit 4,5 and 6 tests on Monday. The tests were not as difficult as the Unit 3 test; unit 3 test was about 3 times harder than the unit 4,5 & 6. Note: I did pass the Unit 3 test last year.

Unit 4 (spirits) is interesting from a theory / knowledge standpoint but the tasting is very hard on your palate if you are used to tasting wines.

I agree with you comments on how to study. Repetition of the content is critical. I posted notes from various sources at http://www.WDUL.com if anyone is interested.

Wow Leon - 3 exams in one day! That's quite an achievement and well done on passing Unit 3. I'll certainly check out "what do you like" as I do my studying.
