A quick update on the London food and wine bloggers World Cup of Wine semi finals last week.
I hadn’t been involved with the heats of this event which runs at Bibendum’s offices in London but was invited to come along and judge the semi finals. These were between Italy and France and South Africa and Australia.
I don’t know how may other heats there have been but a small select group met and scored the wines out of 10, all the scores being totalled to get the final result. Each country fielded two whites and two reds which were pretty comparable.
For me the “wine of the night” was a South African pinot noir closely followed by an Australian pinot. The highest number of marks from everyone however went to a 2005 Italian ripasso valpolicella
The final will be held in June and it will be between Italy and South Africa. It’s hard to believe there was no intention on the part of Bibendum to link this with the football World Cup so it’s quite a coincidence that it is going to be between the current holders of the football World Cup and the 2010 hosts!
Roll on the final (of the World Cup of Wine I mean!).

I wish that we (Italy) could make it to the final. Have you read that JP Morgan forecasts that England will beat Spain in the final?
There's an equal chance for Italy to win as there is for S Africa. Italy did have the top scoring wine of the night after all with the Ripasso. I'm looking forward to the final.
