(I was sure I had posted this update within a few days of the dinner but it appears I hadn’t so here are my notes - better late then never.)
What a friendly bunch of wine bloggers/enthusiasts I met at the dinner organised by Robert Macintosh (@thirstforwine) and Gabriella and Ryan Opaz (@catavino) last week in London. It was a great evening with an eclectic range of wines ranging from some unusual sherries, Spanish malvasia, Patagonian pinot and others too many to mention (as my head confirmed the following morning.) It was a great chance to meet first time some fellow wine lovers whom I had only met "electronically" before:
- Olly Styles – not content with having made wines in two Spanish regions last year, he’s off to New Zealand to make some more. How many winemakers can say they have made three vintages in the space of 12 months? Check out his blog.
- Julian Talaveron – a Spaniard who has come to London to run the Sommelier’s Alumni organisation. And he’s about to start his WSET Diploma. Good luck Julian!
- Steve Delong – creator of the marvellous wine map of Italy. I remember back in my WSET Diploma days thinking I really ought to buy his grape varietal table.
- Warren Edwardes – he’s the founder of Wine for Spice Limited and the video on his Facebook page is highly amusing and informative.
It was also good to finally meet Alison Dillon (@alisonedillon), catch up with Denise Medrano (@thewinesleuth) after her marathon trip to Argentina and hear all about the Natural Wine Fair from Isabelle Legeron.
A highly enjoyable evening with the next one provisionally scheduled for March 15th somewhere in Central London. If you are into wine come and join us. Follow any of us on Twitter and you’ll be able to check out the details nearer the time.
